Mary (Stoner) King was born in Barberton, Ohio, and spent most of her childhood years with her younger brother and sister in Easton, Pennsylvania. Her father, a PH.D. chemist, was awarded numerous significant patents throughout his career. While her mother had a degree in pharmacy, she spent most of her life in the traditional role of housewife.

Mary obtained a BA in Chemistry from the College of Wooster in 1963, and was hired (and trained) as a programmer by IBM in Poughkeepsie, NY. After 5 years with the company she "retired" to raise her two sons.

As the boys grew older she launched a second career in computing at a public high school, where she worked for 18 years. Her responsibilities included hardware and software selection, installation, and training, student schedule creation, and maintaining a student grades database.

Since her term expired she has become the treasuer for the Brant Lake Association, and she continues her role as treasuer for the local AAUW Branch. She is also the webmaster for the Poughkeepsie Branch AAUW website.

She also does various sewing projects, and has recently become the president of the Northern Lights Quilt Guild, the local quilting group. One of Mary's quilts can be seen at the right.
